An Compassion of Strangers: How a Person I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Because my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had booked a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, found a table, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but right away told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she declared: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York led me to a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
