EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
