They're Doing in America What They Did to Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive occasions – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the US president began displaying the public his designs for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to build it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom have business with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the Earth' into 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the leader try to upend the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into a figure of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, since in theory Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and because the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is emphatically not the account of a powerful ruler arising; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the other cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever an individual takes your outer garment you should give the person your additional clothing as well.

The evident and clear fact that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a kind of radical love concentrated on the impoverished has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Conflict for the Finest Among Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to observe the persistent defiance against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired citizens to show up in large quantities during minor elections. We shall require to persist with it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and calls to the finest aspects of American history.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by relationship to the highest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by relationship to what makes it special and wonderful, specifically the model of Jesus. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most negative regarding America and Christian faith never occurred; it signifies both modesty and belief, a mixture that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
